Buy a Slice and Inspire Hope!

Why I Choose to Help Inspire Hope, Raise Awareness & Make a Change

By Mandi Miller, Public Relations Specialist at Duke Raleigh Hospital

I am not an oncology nurse, clinical research specialist , nor am I certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology. But, I do know about cancer.

I know that because of lung cancer, my grandmother didn’t get to help me get ready for my first prom, or attend my high school graduation. I didn’t get to call her and tell her that I had been accepted into college, or buy her one of those “[Your College’s Name Here] Grandma!” sweatshirts. She didn’t get to tell me “Good for you, honey!” when I finally dumped that boyfriend, or scruff her eyebrows and question my judgement when she saw a picture of the next one.

I wasn’t able to mail her copies of my semester grades when I made honor roll, and I don’t have a single picture of her and I in my cap and gown when I graduated. She didn’t get to celebrate with me when I received the offer for my first “real” job, or give me her opinion when I started looking for houses.

The worst part is, there are thousands of others who have this same story. Someone loses their grandmother, grandfather, husband, wife, mother, father, cousin, sister, brother or best friend to lung cancer, every day.

Lung cancer claims more lives in the U.S. than breast, prostate, and colon cancers combined. And, it receives the least amount of funding.

Help us make a change.
