Zaas to Step Down June 30

After close to 20 years at Duke, David Zaas, MD, MBA, President of Duke Raleigh Hospital (DRAH), will leave to become the next Chief Executive Officer of Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Charleston Division and Chief Clinical Officer of MUSC Health.  

During his tenure at DRAH, Dr. Zaas’ leadership has led to significant growth across Wake County. In partnership with the clinical departments, he has significantly advanced the Duke clinical and academic programs in the Raleigh market. Dr. Zaas has led quality and safety improvements for Duke Health throughout his career. Under his leadership, DRAH has maintained straight A’s from the Leapfrog Group since 2012. This year, DRAH earned a 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Dr. Zaas will leave Duke Health on June 30. A national search will be underway soon for his replacement. During the transition time, Leigh Bleecker, Chief Financial Officer at Duke Raleigh Hospital, will serve as interim president.
