Nursing team members at Duke Raleigh Hospital were recently honored for their commitment to giving exceptional care.
Cassandra Alford, RN, who has cared for COVID-19 patients for much of the last year, received the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing.

By her award nominator, Alford was praised for her ability to make medical information clearer and provide the compassionate care that puts patients’ families at ease.
“[Cassandra] explained lab results, vitals, medication, everything and she did it in a way we understood,” the nominator wrote. “I felt more than comfortable leaving my mom in Cassie’s excellent care. She is a keeper!”

The DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses recognizes those in the profession who go above and beyond and make a difference in the experiences of patients and their families.
“These two team members exemplify what it means to be a Duke Raleigh Hospital nurse,” said Chief Nursing Officer Priscilla Ramseur. “Their care for our patients and our patients’ loved ones is an inspiration to our entire team.”
In addition to Alford’s DAISY Award, Jackie Whitaker, a nursing care assistant on the Progressive Care Unit was presented with the Caring Award honoring nursing assistants. Jackie’s nominator praised her as “by far the best nursing assistant I have had,” they wrote. “She is an example of how to do the job and sets the bar high.”
